Golf Grip Test – How Many Holes Before Failure?

The “golf grip test” is a great way to see if your client has the grip strength to compete at a competitive level. The weakest link for many female or male golf athletes is their grip.  (video at bottom of page)

The answer from many pro’s is to simply swing the golf club more. However, in reality the individual also needs training in absolute strength as well as muscular endurance.

That is why football players perform the barbell squat, as well as push the sled. Squats make your legs strong for playing the game of football. Dead-lifts make you strong for playing the game of golf.

The golf grip test is simple. How long can you hold a 225lbs barbell at waist length without dropping it. If your a man under the age of 50, you should make it at least 60 seconds. If your over the age of 50, you should handle gripping 135 lbs for 60-90 seconds with ease. Women should deduct 75lbs from the above average male.

If you are a man that is 60-years-old or older and cannot hold 135 at waist height for 60 seconds, please hire a personal trainer who is knowledgeable in golf sports conditioning. 135lbs is a minimum strength test that is a baseline for overall strength and conditioning for golf sport.

Lets remember that smirk on your friends face as he bets you on that par 5 hole.

Do you want to smoke that guy betting you a beer on a hole he knows is just outside your par reach?  Does he goad you around the 11th hole,  when he knows your tiring?
